Pressure is mounting from government funding agencies to publish data in a form that can readily be shared with other users. DDI documentation is one way to fulfill that mandate, and we can expect more data producers to inquire about preparing such documentation.

This presentation will demonstrate how the Survey Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley, is attempting deal with the task. The basic strategy adopted is to do the job in three stages:

  1. Study-level Information

  2. Variable Specifications

  3. Variable-Group Specifications

Then put the pieces together into a single DDI file, validate it, and you're done.
